Building An Empire

What I like most about this spliced-in documentary about the making of Empire Strikes Back are the small details about how the final film release differs from earlier script drafts, how entire plot threads had to be cut out due to difficulties during shooting and how some of the most memorable moments in the film came to us through last-minute improvisation and adlib.

Watching this, it becomes apparent that the newer Star Wars trilogy was completely devoid of this kind of unforeseen kismet that is, and always has been, part of the chemistry that drives great filmmaking.

This documentary made by Jamie Benning came to me via Gavin Rothery's blog, an incredible source of sci-fi geekery.
